I met a very interesting man yesterday called Martin.
He is a Brit and contacted me via email, saying he had read my book about would like to buy me a beer at The Office. Having found my Achilles Heel, we got chatting, and he turned out to be rather an interesting chap indeed.
For Martin had first come to Jelsa in 1983 as the only British holiday rep. A regular visitor since, his insights into how Jelsa has changed were fascinating, and we will be doing a couple of features on his experiences in the coming weeks.
More immediately interesting were his assertions that the hotel where he was staying – 3-star Hotel Hvar, formerly Mina – had been full on his arrival and would be again soon. Indeed, he had been told that it would be open until October 25, so the tourist numbers for the late season should be extremely good, pointing to a successful season.
Curious, I checked out Booking.com to see what kind of deals there were. Here is what I found:
One night half board for one person, with pool etc, just 194 kuna per night. Not bad at all. Take out the 13% VAT and the minimum 15% Booking.com commission, and that comes down to 139.68 kuna a night. For a single.
Prefer a sea view? For another 7 kuna, including the 13% VAT and 15% commission, and one is yours for just 201 kuna.
But for real value, why not treat a loved one and take a room for two. Including breakfast and dinner, it works out at just 149 kuna per person, or 107.28 after VAT and Booking.com commission. Feeling flush? For an extra 6.5 kuna per person, you can upgrade to a sea view.
Jelsa in September is magical, and at those prices, we are considering moving to the hotel.
