A Day in the Life of Jelsa’s Young Chess Champions

Total Croatia News

Another early 4am start for Total Hvar Junior yesterday, as she and the other girls who make up the female Jelsa chess team headed for the first ferry at 05:30, destination Zadar.

It was a similar early start a couple of weeks ago, as the girls, along with their male counterparts, headed to Split to take part in the county championships. It was a day of medals, as the girls returned with gold, and the boys with a bronze.

Gold meant entry to the inter-county chanpionships in Zadar yesterday, and before one things about the competition itself, spare a thought for the schedule of our competing heroes, and the challenges island competitors have in national championships. A 4am wake-up call, 05:30 ferry for two hours, two hour drive to Zadar, and only then can the games begin. On the way home, if they were not back in time for the 16:00 catamaran, then a wait until the 20:30 ferry and home by 23:00.

In the event, our little heroines had rather a good day of it, picking up not only the silver medal, but back in time to make the 16:00 catamaran, after which 4 out of the 5 found time to pose with the trophy back at school. Bravo girls! And bravo once more Professor Loncar, the latest medal in a glittering history of the Jelsa Chess Club under his tutelage.
