July 19, 2023 – Many of us seek respite and an escape from the summer heat in the mountains but often forget how important safety is. The 24-hour Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS) points out that, first of all, you need to be well-informed and prepared. They shared their advice for all planning on hiking in Croatia.
“Before you go hiking in Croatia, it is important to thoroughly prepare and inform yourself about the mountains and routes you plan to hike. Collect information about weather conditions, difficulty of the trails, hiking signs, and any special conditions in the chosen area,” states the HGSS for 24Sata.
Quality equipment, compass, flashlight
It is important, in addition, to ensure you have adequate equipment for hiking in the summer. This includes good hiking shoes, clothing adapted to the weather conditions, a hat or cap for sun protection, sunglasses, sunscreen, a compass, a map of the area, a flashlight, and first aid.
“Monitor the weather conditions before you go to the mountain and during the hike. Weather changes can be sudden and can significantly affect safety,” they state.
Moreover, in order not to get lost, it is necessary to move safely along the path.
Move in Groups and Stick to the Markings
“Stick to the marked trails and follow the instructions of hiking signs. Avoid cutting or deviating from the marked trail as this can lead to getting lost or an unwanted situation. Watch out for rough parts of the trail and be careful when crossing streams or rivers,” they said.
They also explain why they recommend hiking in a group.
“If you plan to hike on your own, let someone know your plans and the estimated time of return. Also, stick with the group and don’t fall behind or get separated from it.”
They also note that it is necessary to take care of nature and the environment, not to leave garbage behind, and not to destroy the flora and fauna.
Enough water and food, phone batteries FUll
“It is important to ensure enough fluids and stay hydrated while hiking in Croatia in the summer. Carry enough water or fluids with you, and replenish supplies along the way if necessary. Be sure to bring enough food.”
Before setting off, make sure that your mobile phone has enough battery.
“A mobile phone can be an important tool for calling for help in the event of an accident or unforeseen situation. Also, it is important to remember the number 112, which is the emergency number in most European countries,” says HGSS.
