September the 12th, 2023 – For the amount of bikes there are zooming around all over the Croatian capital, there isn’t anywhere near enough proper, safe infrastructure for them. A brand new Zagreb cycling and walking zone should help solve matters.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, with the aim of freeing as much public space as possible for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as encouraging the use of public transport, the City of Zagreb is expanding pedestrian zones in the centre and other parts of the city.
In parallel with the beginning of the European Mobility Week, a new pedestrian zone will be established as part of the planned Zagreb cycling and walking routes. It will run along part of Masarykova street, from Gundulićeva to Ulica Nikole Tesla, and along part of Preradovićeva, more specifically from the intersection with Masarykova and Ulica Nikole Tesle to Berislavićeva.
Preparations for new traffic regulations in the centre
The permitted direction of movement along Berislavićeva is altering and will now be permitted from east to west with access from Gajeva. All of that will be done in order to enable regular vehicle access to Preradovićeva on the section lying south of Berislavićeva.
Furthermore, a new traffic regulation will be established in phases, which will ensure more safe areas for pedestrians and cyclists, while ensuring the flow of motor traffic, according to the City of Zagreb’s statement.
Bike paths for Gundulićeva
As part of the new Zagreb cycling routes, along Gundulićeva, more specifically along part from Varšavska to Ul. Andrije Hebranga, the southbound traffic lane has been abolished, and the two northbound traffic lanes have been moved to the middle of the road. Cycling lanes will be marked on both sides (one for each direction).
This will remove the current bike lanes from the pavements, which has posed an irritating problem for Zagreb’s pedestrians for a long time now and will give them more free space for safe and free movement.
Cycling infrastructure on Trg Republike Hrvatske
Along the north side of Trg Republike Hrvatske, the marking out of more Zagreb cycling paths has been planned. This is also the case along the initial part of Masarykova to Gundulićeva, where there will be only one traffic lane heading in east, with two-way bicycle lanes marked out on the road.
The City of Zagreb has invited all legal and natural persons, as well as enterprises who meet the prescribed conditions to submit their applications for access to the new pedestrian zone as soon as possible.
