September the 12th, 2023 – Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic has headed off to Ireland, but he isn’t quite following the same path as many other Croats have before him.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic is set to meet with his Irish colleague Leo Varadkar, the President of the State, Michael Higgins, and the Speakers of the House of Representatives and the Senate of the Parliament, Sean O Fearghaíl and Jerry Buttimer.
From Ukraine to the Croatian community in the Republic of Ireland
The Croatian and Irish officials are expected to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries which have grown rather unexpectedly closer in recent years owing to significant Croatian emigration to Ireland. Aside from those topics, international matters such as the ongoing war in Ukraine will likely be topics on the table.
Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic plans to end his visit to the Republic of Ireland with a meeting with representatives of the Croatian community in Ireland.
Croatia’s demographic issues continue to dog the country, and many Croats seeking better wages, more economic stability and above all – more transparency, have headed up north to Ireland over more recent years. This wave of emigration has seen the two nations grow closer and see the need to nurture a deeper relationship going forward.
