April the 5th, 2023 – Mayor Tomislav Tomašević has announced the beginning of the “largest Zagreb project in history” at a recently held press conference.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, Tomislav Tomašević addressed those gathered with some very positive news about a huge Zagreb project which will finally solve the capital’s endless issues with the water supply network and pipes.
“This is the largest Zagreb project in the city’s history, and at the same time the largest project that the city has applied for using EU funding. And as you know, no investment has been made in Zagreb’s water supply network for decades now, so the situation is only getting worse when it comes to water losses.
Looking back at 2007, when Zagreb Holding, which also includes VIO, issued 300 million euros of bonds on the London Stock Exchange. Back then, they pledged to invest most of it in back into the city’s water network, but in the end only a few percent of that amount actually ended up going where it needed to. That’s why we have so many burst pipes and losses across the city, and many people don’t have proper access to the water network.
Now, we’re going to correct that injustice. On March the 25th, this large Zagreb project was registered for EU funds, and it’s worth 323 million euros. It’s therefore as valuable as four of the cable cars up on Sljeme. This is the biggest project in all of Croatia”, Tomašević claimed, adding that it will mostly be financed through EU funds, so water prices will not have to rise because of this.
