August the 4th, 2024 – The Elaphite islands near Dubrovnik are a draw for many, and the sandy beach on car-free Lopud is perhaps one of the biggest lures for many.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the most gorgeous islands in the Elaphite archipelago feel an entire world away from the summer hustle and bustle of Dubrovnik. One island, the amazing car-free Lopud, can boast of some truly magical hidden beaches, untouched nature, olive groves, and historical architecture, as zadovoljna.hr reports.
Of the ten Elaphite islands, only three are inhabited, and they’re all very popular with people visiting nearby Dubrovnik and the extreme south of Dalmatia. The island of Šipan boasts over 60 extravagant summer houses, Koločep (locally called Kalamota) is ideal for lovers of nature and diving. It’s car-free Lopud, however, where one of the most beautiful sandy beaches on the Adriatic, Šunj, is hidden.
On this beach, you can expect azure waters from a clean and warm sea, warm, soft sand under your feet, dense pine forests providing shade and secret paths, as well as wooden sun loungers under straw umbrellas.
The very journey to beautiful Šunj is a special experience. Since Lopud is an entirely car-free island, a rather interesting taxi will be what brings you from the centre of Lopud to Šunj beach. They’re golf carts driven by friendly locals. The ride lasts for about 10 minutes, and the experience is truly something special. The wind in your hair providing much needed refreshment from the harsh Dalmatian sun, the smell of the abundant Mediterranean pine trees and endless untouched nature all make the ride there worthwhile.
Šunj is exceptionally special for its long shallow stretches of water and an extremely warm sea. In order to actually be able to submerge yourself and swim, you’ll need to walk for almost 150 metres out into the water. This is precisely why it is the perfect choice for parents with small children who can be carefree while their children play in the shallows.
