October the 18th, 2024 – New Zagreb semi-underground waste containers are on the horizon as the city grapples with its age old issue of proper waste disposal.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, back in mid-April, the City of Zagreb announced a public procurement procedure for 600 semi-underground waste containers. In the documentation, it was stated that there would be 200 each for glass, paper and plastic, with an estimated purchase value of 1.51 million euros without VAT.

Before the end of this month, the capital’s administration will announce a public procurement of 4.2 million euros without VAT. It involves a tentative two-year agreement with a company that should install three new Zagreb semi-underground waste containers for glass, paper and plastic at 270 locations across ten city districts.

From the data that is currently under consultation, it’s evident that the city districts have been divided into three groups. In the first are Donji (Lower) and Gornji (Upper) Grad, Trnje, Novi Zagreb – west, in the second Trešnjevka – north and south and Podsljeme, and in the third category are Stenjevec, Črnomerec, Podsused – Vrapče. In each of the aforementioned groups, the current plan is to install the new Zagreb semi-underground waste containers in 90 locations, according to tportal.

Following the framework agreement, several individual contracts will be concluded in accordance with the dynamics conditioned by the delivery of projects for the installation of the new Zagreb semi-underground waste containers, and the locations will then be defined by the committee. The deadline for the execution of the works under individual contracts will be defined by the call for tenders, depending on the number of locations and the complexity and scope of the intervention. The expected maximum deadline for the execution of the works at a particular location is five days from the start of work.

This is part of the much wider plan of Zagreb’s administration with the aim of completely removing bins and containers from the streets and installing 2,253 semi-underground containers in 751 locations throughout Zagreb by the end of 2027.

Mayor Tomislav Tomašević announced the project of installing new waste containers back at the end of September. He added that a field tour was conducted in the first half of 2024 and the locations for the new system were were defined. He added that one such container will replace four bins on the street. The new containers will be opened using an app, and people will be able to keep their eye on the waste collection schedule in a better way.

A pilot project for the installation of these new waste containers was carried out in Vrbik. As such, a map with all of the already installed containers and the 751 locations here.
