December the 20th, 2025 – An expressway from the city to Dubrovnik Airport is currently being planned. There’s been a bit of controversy surrounding it, but local votes will apparently govern the process.

As Morski writes, an expressway from the city to Dubrovnik Airport is currently being planned, which will make the trip from Croatia’s tourist Mecca to the airport far less stressful and time consuming, particularly during the very height of the summer season. Despite the obvious positives, the idea for the future route has caused controversy in the general public. Naturally, locals are very interested in precisely how the new Construction Act will reflect the wishes of local people.

Given the fact that the future expressway to Dubrovnik Airport represents a particularly big change for the city, local residents have been reassured by Dubrovnik-Neretva County Prefect Blaž Pezo that their vote on this matter will be decisive:

“The aforementioned law isn’t going to bring anything new, Minister Bačić wanted to explain that the law will only speed up the procedures for issuing permits for projects. When determining the route for the future expressway to Dubrovnik Airport, the opinion of the public, the local community, as well as the regional view, will all be taken into account. None of that will be bypassed. However, the procedure for obtaining permits itself, once the route is defined and the public agrees on it, will end up being much faster than it has been until now,” explained Pezo.

As for Croatia’s southernmost municipality of Konavle, which is actually where Dubrovnik Airport is located, the route has more or less been completely defined. For Župa (the Parish of Dubrovnik), the prefect had the opportunity to meet with representatives of Croatian Roads (Hrvatske Ceste) and get answers to pressing questions.

“I think the entire story is much clearer now, and in the coming days additional meetings with Croatian Roads engineers will be held. I believe that after that, both the Municipality and the Municipal Council will take a position and that we will finally find out where locals actually want the future expressway to be located, and then the route in the area of the City of Dubrovnik will be defined,” Pezo concluded.
