March the 4th, 2026 – Croatia has retained a very impressive position on Numbeo’s trusted Safety Index by Country for 2026. Rijeka and Zagreb are also in the top 25 safest cities.
We all know that if there’s one thing Croatia wins the crowds over for outside of sunshine and sea, then it’s safety. Croatia is widely considered to be one of Europe’s safest countries, with crime outside of bribery and corruption (which is deemed high) being very unlikely.
Croatia as a country has ranked in 16th place on Numbeo’s Safety Index for 2026, with a 75.7 safety index. While the entire country is considered safe, it’s always interesting to note that this remains the case for larger cities as well, despite the influx of tourists each and every summer.
a look at zagreb
Even in the capital, where there is a far higher population density and a much wider range of religions, cultures and nationalities, crime has remained very low, despite a moderate increase being noted over the past half a decade.

a look at rijeka
Rijeka, known as Croatia’s “city that flows” has always stood out for its more moderate, liberal and open outlook to the rest of the world. It’s a quirky city that has a rich industrial past.

corruption remains a serious issue
It can clearly be seen that corruption remains a serious problem both at the national and local levels in Croatia, with bribery and corruption being considered high despite the rest being enviably low throughout. Croatia’s issues with crime continue to run deep and often far from the sight of the general public, resident or visiting.
Coloured very firmly in a shade of dark green, Croatia continues to be one of the world’s safest countries for the average Joe. This continues to be a huge selling point for tourism in a world currently dominated by complex conflicts, escalations and an increasingly concerning geopolitical climate.
