September the 30th, 2026 – Split is set to construct a totem at the very entrance to the city, with 130,000 euros to spend on it.
Split will announce a public competition for a spatial marker, or totem, with which it wants to mark the entrance to the city. A total of 130,000 euros has been allocated for the project through 2026 and 2027. Index reports that on the 25th of August, Split Mayor Tomislav Šuta issued a conclusion on conducting a competition that should result in a “high-quality, recognisable and feasible design solution” for marking the city entrance.
The competition will seek proposals for the appearance, materials, basic dimensions, method of installation, visual identity and how the marker will fit into the immediate space and urban context. The final appearance, material and dimensions of the totem have therefore not yet been determined. The competition does not cover only the conceptual design. The official conclusion also states that its subject includes the production of the marker itself by the author of the winning solution.
130,000 euros have been allocated
In the budget, 80,000 euros has been earmarked for the activity “Marking the city entrance” in 2026, and a further 50,000 euros in 2027. The competition will be prepared and conducted by the city’s Department for City Development and the Croatian Designers’ Association, with the participation of other city departments. Official documents so far do not indicate exactly how much the production of the totem itself will cost, as other project costs are also financed from the same budget item.
