More than 10 000 gaming enthusiasts are expected to visit Split for this event
It is often said Split in Croatia is one of the sportiest cities in the world, and even though we are used to announcing big sporting championships in football, handball or basketball, this time, a less traditional sport is taking centre stage. As it was announced on a press conference on November 20, 2015, Split will host its first World Gaming Championship in Spaladium Arena 17-21 March,2016.
This is a Dota Pit and Counter Pit championship and the very first global E-Sport competition organised in Croatia. More than 110 players from all over the world will compete for the coveted title and the prize pool is quite impressive – $100 000 for Counter Pit and $80 000 for Dota Pit. Entire competition will be streamed and according to one of the organisers, Ivan Marušić more than a million viewers are expected to tune in. Considering that more than 10 000 spectators from the entire region are expected to follow the championship in person in Spaladium Area, it is clear this sport is extremely popular.
“This event will bring more than 10 000 spectators from all over the world to our city. This is our way of promoting Split and Dalmatia” said Dino Lujetić, one of the organisers.
“We were offered to host this event in some other cities because there’s a lot of interest for these championships in the entire region but we wanted to bring this gaming spectacle to Split because the idea to tackle the organisation of such a huge event came from this city” said Ivan Marušić.
