After many years and long travels all over the world, the famous statue has returned home.
Yesterday afternoon the long-awaited ancient statue of Apoxyomenos finally arrived in Mali Lošinj, after many years of travelling and visiting some of the most prominent and well-known galleries and museums of the world. It will soon be housed at its new permanent home – the Apoxyomenos Museum which will be located at the Waterfront of Lošinj Captains, reports Novi List on April 8, 2016.
The world-famous statue, brought to the island under heavy police escort and accompanied with strict security measures, had been waiting for its return to the island in a depot of the Croatian Conservation Institute in Zagreb, and will soon take its permanent position under strictly controlled and demanding environmental and technical conditions that the museum had to meet according to the criteria set by the Institute.
The new museum meets all the technical requirements, including controlled heating and cooling systems depending on the season, humidity control and other similar systems supplied by some of the best Croatian companies.
The ancient statue of an athlete which has arrived in Mali Lošinj was found on the seabed near the island of Vela Orjula in 1997. From now on, it will be the only, the most unique and the most valuable exhibit in the Apoxyomenos Museum, an avant-garde environment built in the former Palace of Kvarner, according to the project designed by the Randić-Turato architectural bureau.
The opening ceremony of the Apoxyomenos Museum will be held on 30 April, with the expected attendance by Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, accompanied by a number of ministers and ambassadors. The ceremony and a series of accompanying events will mark the end of the process of the return of Apoxyomenos to Lošinj.
