MamaMia Art is a name you will probably be hearing a lot in the years to come. As reported by InMagazin on January 6,2016, this mother daughter team from Split has come up with a jewelry line that is not only unique in its form, it is also virtually indestructible.
MamaMia brand is the brainchild of Mia Caktaš and her mother. They both share a love for unusual jewellery, fine art, precision and perfection and it didn’t take long for them to turn their hobby into a serious design line. Most of their jewellery is created from recycled paper which is then carefully twisted and applied strip by strip: “We use a special paper wrapping technique. Mum used to make various shapes and artwork from paper which I always found fascinating, and since I am crazy about one of a kind jewellery and clothes, I came up with an idea to join forces with her and turn this hobby into a business” Mia says.
So, they soon started turning all newspapers and magazines into beautiful pieces of art, and what’s best, they found a way to spend some quality time together doing things they both enjoy.
Even though many Split fashionistas already know about her designs and wear her jewellery, Mia is still surprised by the reactions she gets on the street: “I never expected that people would stop me on the street to ask me where I bought my necklace or bracelet. I’ve had situations where I took my jewellery off in the middle of the street to give it away to a fan. I think that’s the best possible compliment one can get”.
Mia his a graduated engineer working in civil engineering so making jewellery is her way of combining things that usually cannot be combed and her escape from stress: “It gives me the opportunity to channel my creative energy. It is both my love and my passion” Mia adds.
It takes a lot of precision, care and time to create every single piece since careful layering followed by precise coating makes this jewellery almost indestructible. Each necklace takes almost 7 days to make, so patience is a key element along with talent. A mother daughter team does not intend to limit itself only making jewellery, they’re already thinking of other ways utilize old paper – a raw material that is all around us and most of us find almost worthless.
