The controversial economist and former Greek Finance Minister will visit Zagreb in December.
As soon as the media announced the news that in early December, as part of the Philosophy Theatre festival at the Croatian National Theatre, controversial economist and former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis will visit Zagreb, tickets for all 700 seats in the theatre have been sold out, reports N1 on November 11, 2016.
There is tremendous level of interest for the latest season of the Philosophy Theatre festival, and some have already proclaimed that the visit of Yanis Varoufakis on Sunday, 4 December, will be the intellectual and political event of the year.
Varoufakis issued a statement announcing his visit to Zagreb. “In order for the European Union to succeed anywhere, it must succeed everywhere: in Croatia, in Germany, in Greece, in France. However, the European Union is now collapsing everywhere because its officials have decided to treat parts of Europe and certain nations as a collateral damage of their incompetent management of the European banking crisis. Our idea is that the change in Europe can start anywhere, before it continues everywhere. In December, we will start in Zagreb, in a city where I have already felt the energy of change.” This will be Varoufakis’ first visit to Croatia since his turbulent fight against the European establishment, although he did visit the Croatian capital before.
“There is also great media interest in the visit of leading sociologists Zygmunt Bauman and Aleksandra Kanie as part of the Philosophy Theatre. They will be our guests on Sunday, 27 November, when they will speak with host Srećko Horvat at the Croatian National Theatre, to discuss the crisis in Europe, refugee crisis and the latest topic – Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential elections”, announced the organizers.
Zygmunt Bauman is one of the most important and most influential living sociologists, originally from Poland, an author of nearly sixty books. His fields of interest are globalization, modernism, postmodernism, consumerism and ethics. Aleksandra Kania is a Russian sociologist and author of twelve books which explore the topics of democracy, nationalism, national identity and ethnic stereotypes.
