The symbol of Croatian pride and unity brought together Croats from around the world, while the sweet taste from humanitarian dinners organised by emigrant communities will be remembered for a while.

“I am extremely pleased with the response of citizens, both in Croatia and abroad. Citizens recognised the importance and symbolism of this project and participated in its renovation, the planned preservation and conversion of the water tower,” said Vukovar Mayor Ivan Penava.
Croatian diaspora has so far donated 2,222.234,70 Kuna.

“The satisfaction is even greater as the donor list holds names from around the globe, which is much more important than financial support. We constantly find affirmation that this project is heading in a good direction and we expect to start the reconstruction soon,” disclosed the head of Vukovar.

The Hrvatski Vjesnik organised two humanitarian dinners in Sydney and Melbourne in the middle of this year titled “United We Stand” where Croats gave their contributions. Their hearts were obviously very large.

“This action and its title symbolize the unity of the Croatian community, and us emigrant with the homeland. By suffering all those hits during the three month siege and not toppling, the Vukovar water tower became a symbol of defiance and pride,” pointed out Zoran Juraj Sabljak, chief editor of the Australian weekly.

Germany sent to Vukovar 123.001,76 Kuna, followed by Canada with 72.066,86 Kuna, Austria with 64.027,81 Kuna and Sweden with 48.724,23 Kuna.

The Croatian Brotherhood Community in Pittsburgh collected 350 thousand Kuna. The amount will be transferred soon.

To complete the entire project a total of 16,700.000 Kuna + VAT is needed.
