A warm and sunny Sunday drew many outdoors to partake in the Dubrovnik tradition which takes you to new heights on foot.
As is tradition on the fifth Sunday of Lent, yesterday’s typically sunny Dubrovnik afternoon drew out over 100 people to walk the picturesque serpentine slope 412 meters up to the top of Mount Srdj. Led by the much loved Bishop of Dubrovnik, Mate Uzinic, the group began their journey uphill at around 14:00 in the comfortable, bright springtime temperatures.
In its 20 years of existence, the Way of the Cross has been held annually on the fifth Sunday of Lent, with believers making their way up the steep, curving slopes of Srdj to remember and appreciate Jesus’s very own Way of the Cross, and to keep alive the eternal hope of mankind for the victory of good over evil, of life over death, and of love. As per tradition, the Way of the Cross comes to its close with prayers at the foot of the large stone cross on top of Srdj which looks down over Dubrovnik. The position of Srdj’s iconic cross also offers an incredible panoramic view of the both the historical centre and the rest of the city, the sea and the surrounding islands on one side, the village of Bosanka and Cavtat in Konavle on the other and the interior of neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina from the back.
”We are all susceptible to pain and suffering. We saw that Jesus was not released from that. Suffering is part of our human life.” stated Bishop Mate Uzinic.
This, the Jubilee Way of the Cross was held within the framework of this year’s Days of Christian Culture, which is currently being held in Dubrovnik for the twelfth consecutive year.
