The City of Zagreb is planning to acquire 60 new low-floor trams, reported jutarnji.hr on April 11th, 2017. The investment is estimated at 600 million kuna and is supposed to be covered by EU funding.
The initiative was conceived back in 2010, when the mayor Milan Bandić and his associates planned a project to purchase 60 short low-floor trams. The project was dropped due to lack of financial resources and unfavorable political circumstances at the time.
At the moment, the City of Zagreb is in possession of 140 long low-floor trams, and the only two short low-floor trams are worth around 12 million kuna each. According to ZET reports, in December 2016 the tram rolling stock in Zagreb included 346 various vehicles, whose average age amounted to 26,66 years. There are 30 trams currently in circulation that are older than 47 years.
Asked to comment on the topic, the mayor stated that the project is not yet in the works, but confirmed the City plans to procure 60 trams in the next four years, reported vecernji.hr on April 12th, 2017. The trams in question can transport up to 130 passengers, with the maximum speed of 70 km/h. First new vehicles should be acquired in 2018.
