In our weekly art feature, we bring you a selection of cultural events and exhibitions in various places on the Adriatic coast.
This week, we suggest checking out the following three exhibitions in Rovinj, Opatija and Split:
1) Dieter Cornels – Veero, Rovinj City Museum
The City Museum in Rovinj is honouring the German artist Dieter Cornels-Veero with a posthumous exhibition, featuring a number of his works created in the latest stage of his career. Cornels-Veero is known for his surrealist visions and a distinctive pop-art style, presenting us with a vivid fund of motives, a treasury of symbols and free-flowing associations, open horizons and labyrinths, as stated by the museum curator Dario Sošić. The exhibition stays on display until 25 June; the colourful expression and a remarkable creative universe of the artist make for a perfect introduction to the most carefree season of the year.

2) Hotels, boarding houses and health resorts of Lošinj, Croatian Museum of Tourism
Opatija’s Croatian Museum of Tourism, located in the picturesque Villa Angiolina, continues with their programme of guest city exhibitions. This time, we’re getting an insight into 125 years of tourism history on the islands of Mali Lošinj and Veli Lošinj: 54 tourist objects are presented, including hotels, boarding houses and institutes for health; the visuals are accompanied by a rich trove of information about the beginnings of tourism development on Lošinj. Before World War I, all the tourist objects used to be open throughout the year, providing guests with top-quality health services and facilities. A fascinating peek into the history of one of the most attractive islands on the Adriatic, dating all the way back to 1887!

3) Split *** Three stars, Salon Galić Gallery

The Salon Galić Gallery in Split presents us with a fascinating view of the city created by the photographer and artist Duška Boban. Taken between 2002 and 2017 during her long walks around town, the melancholic photos show some of the urban spaces that are woven into the collective memory of Split citizens: Villa Dalmacija, Dalmacijavino winery and Koteks-Gripe complex. The concept of the exhibition is playing with the idea of *** as appointed to the three ‘star’ locations in the city, as well as subtly pointing to the mediocrity of the existing tourist offer.
