Zagreb Greets Austria at Zrinjevac

As part of the Cultural Year Austria – Croatia 2017, an event called “Zagreb greets Austria” will be organised at Zrinjevac Park, June 8 – 11. Austrian tourists are among the top tourist who visit Zagreb and in 2016 there was  an increase of 19% in their arrivals and overnight stays, UHPA reports.

Bečka škola (“Viennese school”) is a phrase which is still used to denote a very formal etiquette, something the Viennese have always been famous for. Zagreb residents have looked up to their formal and refined manners ever since Croatia was part of Austria-Hungary and older citizens still remember the good old times when this type of demeanour was prevalent in the city.

At 3:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and on 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, the Bečka škola part of the programme will present old children’s games, poetry, music, the traditional Agram (old word for Zagreb) vocabulary, remnants of which are still present in everyday Zagreb speech, and later on, visitors will be able to enjoy fencing school, waltz, listen to choirs and watch a movie, as well as taste Vienna specialties, spritzers, ice cream, beer, and sweets
