Uljanik has announced the conclusion of the contract for the construction of a ship for cable laying with the Norwegian contractor Nexans Subsea Operations.
Uljanik Shipyard signed a contract for the construction of a ship for cable laying with the Norwegian company Nexans Subsea Operations AS, reports Pomorac.net, on August 29, 2017.
This 149.9-metre-long and 31-metre-wide ship, which will be built in Uljanik, will be one of the largest and technologically most sophisticated ships of this type in the world, whose purpose is to lay cables at depths of several thousand meters with the help and surveillance of a remote controlled submarine.
The cable laying system incorporates a controlled cable management system with Dynamic Positioning System (DP3), which allows the ship to maintain its default position at any time and to prevent damage to the cable due to uncontrolled movement of the ship. This type of ship will need a lot of complex equipment in order to perform its essential function, such as special cranes and the most advanced system for precise positioning of the ship via GPS, which coordinates all other systems such as propulsion, navigation, cable laying and more. Along with the workforce and experts from the shipyard, a large number of Croatian companies will be involved in the construction of this ship through the manufacture of marine equipment and other specialized works.
“Building this new boat for laying cables is a fundamental step in terms of our commitment to clean energy,” said Arnaud Poupart-Lafarge, director of Nexans .” For decades, Nexans has been working on energy transition and sustainable development. The next step includes new state-of-the-art ship technology that will enable us to meet customer expectations, while Nexans will provide support to countries in their development of unlimited renewable energy potential, “Poupart-Lafarge adds.
The new ship was designed by Skipsteknisk AS. Laying equipment allows the ship to perform complex installation operations of flexible products in shallow and deep waters.
“Along with our legendary CLV ‘Nexans Skagerrak’ ship, the new ship will boost Nexans’ position as the leading player in this growing market,” said Dirk Steinbrink, Senior Vice President of High Voltage and Underwater Cable Business Group in Nexans .”With advanced technology, impressive capacity and numerous cable laying capabilities, this ship will be one of the key strategic assets of Nexans.”
The cable laying ship is expected to be delivered and commence with work in the third trimester of 2020.
