Multiple areas in northern and central Dalmatia were hit by heavy rainfall and tempestuous wind on Sunday
Cyclones headed our way via Italy have been increasingly affecting the weather in Croatia recently. The latest case is the cyclone Gracija, one that hit the northern Adriatic and the Dalmatian coast on Sunday, reports Dalmacija danas on September 11, 2017.
After the recent drought that caused substantial damage to crops in Dalmatia, the local population was looking forward to some heavy rainfall. However, as it often happens after a serious drought, an extreme quantity of rain can result in flash floods, inflicting more damage to the area.

The storm hit northern Dalmatia first, then headed further south. The largest precipitation quantity was recorded in Rogoznica, where 80 litres of rain were measured in one day – more than their monthly average!
The Volunteer Fire Department in Rogoznica stated they had numerous interventions in the evening hours on Sunday. In a span of multiple hours, they were called to ten locations to help pump out the water from flooded establishments: heavy rain flooded basements, apartments, restaurants and bars. The firemen said the flood streams were 50 cm deep at certain points.
Žirje, Drniš and Žaborić have all seen approximately 40 litres of rain per square metre.
The firefighters in Primošten had to intervene when a tree was knocked down by strong jugo wind and crushed a parked car.

A tornado hit Gornje Selo on Šolta island, ripping out trees and causing damage to houses. Brač and Hvar experienced heavy storms as well.
Crometeo
More than 50 litres of rainfall were recorded in Omiš and Makarska. The firefighters in Omiš had to pump put water quickly to prevent the Old Town from flooding.
Out at the sea, swells reached up to 2 metres in height. The southeast wind will continue to have a velocity of 35-50 knots today, declining towards the end of the day.
