Archaeological Museum in the Works for Pridvorje!

A praiseworthy project for one tiny Konavle settlement…

Nestled in the rolling green hills of the peaceful Konavle region lies the small settlement of Pridvorje. Left almost entirely alone by the many tourists visiting Dubrovnik, and despite the close proximity of the airport, this area in Croatia’s southernmost municipality has managed to hold on to a level of tranquility that is rarely seen in the modern world, even during the summer time.

With little in the way of infrastructure, this somewhat ”off the beaten track” location boasts nothing but history and I’m not sure that anywhere else in Croatia, at least in this part of the country, boasts quite the same impressive feeling of being in a time warp. In the silence and stillness of Pridvorje, one really could be stepping back in history to much, much simpler times.

Flanked by evergreen covered karst mountains to one side and the Adriatic sea to the other, this forgotten little corner of Croatia has plenty of untapped potential. While cycling and horse riding are two of the forms of sustainable tourism that do indeed go on in and around Pridvorje, the area is otherwise rarely stumbled upon by tourists.

Famed for its perfect wine growing climate and best known for its cultural manifestations and traditional craftmanship, Konavle still lives very much in the shadow of Dubrovnik. But owing to the numerous historical finds over the years in the Konavle region, Pridvorje might just end up falling on to the radar of some history buffs yet…

As Dubrovnik Press Portal reports on the 29th of September, 2017, the Mayor of Konavle, Božo Lasić, announced during a session of the Municipal Council that on the eve of the Day of the Municipality of Konavle, an archaeological museum will be opened at the beautiful Franciscan Monastery of Saint Blaise (Sveti Vlaho), in Pridvorje.

The museum, the opening of which has been in the works and much anticipated for quite some time now, will house a permanent exhibition.

“The aim is to have an archeological museum with a permanent exhibition and we’re working on this intensively. The significance of this museum for Konavle is exceptional because all the findings in the area of the Municipality will remain here in Konavle. Konavle deserves this museum” stated Lasić.
