The truffle frenzy in Istria is reaching its peak
I’ll be honest, we’ve been laying it on heavy with truffles for the last few weeks, but the months of October and November are a true source of joy. The truffles are in season, and there is no better way to enjoy the nature’s bounty than right at the source: food festivals in Istria.
The season kicked of with the Terrano and truffles festival in Motovun, and the Zigante Truffle Days in Livade have almost a month to go before the end of the 10-week extravaganza.
Here’s another event to add to your truffle bash: the Istrian Truffle Weekend Festival that’s about to take place in Buzet on the weekend of November 4, 2017.
While there are plenty of truffle-themed destinations in Istria, Buzet is the only one to boast the official title of the City of Truffles. The 16th edition of the festival will again pay tribute to the adored delicacy with a fair featuring more than sixty exhibitors from Istria and other parts of Croatia. Truffles, honey, cheese, prosciutto, olive oil, wine, rakia… You name it, and you’re sure to find it somewhere at the 1000 square metres of the festival tent in Mašimova škuja.
“The Istrian Truffle Weekend Festival is the most significant manifestation that’s part of Buzet’s brand, accompanied by Subotina fair in September and the preparation of a truffle omelette in a gigantic pan. The fair has been growing with each passing year, with the number of visitors and exhibitors increasing noticeably. We’re exceptionally pleased to be able to gather all the relevant companies that manufacture truffle products, as well as numerous manufacturers of products indigenous to Istria”, said Buzet Mayor Siniša Žulić, who is also the director of the local tourist board.
As tradition entails, the festival activities will commence on Saturday at 10 with a truffle hunt, an adventurous sports race combined with a scavenger hunt. The race takes place all over the wider Buzet area, and includes trekking, MTB and other various challenging tasks. Around fifty teams from Croatia and Slovenia are expected to participate in this year’s hunt; all the competitors are required to carry truffle-harvesting equipment and either a dog or a pig – plushies acceptable.
The fair will be open on both days from 11 to 19, and visitors will be able to sample and buy delicious products to their hearts’ desire. The organisers have prepared numerous activities for those who will need a break from feasting: a dog show will take place on Saturday at 12, the winning truffle of the festival will be presented on Saturday at 14, and a presentational truffle hunt will take place in Buzet forest on Sunday from 14 to 17.
