Croatian Post will hopefully improve the level of service.
On Friday, Croatian Post (HP) opened a new automatic sorting centre at its facilities at Branimir Street in Zagreb, which is part of an investment cycle worth approximately half a billion kunas whose implementation will continue in 2018, said the managing director of Croatian Post Ivan Čulo, reports Poslovni.hr on December 9, 2017.
The newly-opened facility is one of six new systems for automatic sorting of shipments, five of which are located in Zagreb, while the remaining one is in Split. The total value of investment in new systems is 62 million kunas.
“The improvement of our business operations is carried out according to the Pošta2022 strategy which, in addition to new sorting facilities, includes the Digital Postman and Yellow Click projects, as well as new delivery vehicles which have already been purchased. Sorting systems are especially important for the stability of the business operations because the old equipment significantly threatened our core business,” said Čulo, adding that the new machines were purchased in the United States and were twice as fast, precise and safe than the previous ones.
This is especially important in the most demanding periods of the year, such as the pre-Christmas season, when Croatian Post receives and delivers 2.5 million shipments. New machines can handle about 230,000 shipments in an hour.
Čulo said that the price of postal services, including delivery of letters, would not increase. He also pointed out that the construction of a large HP distribution centre near Velika Gorica was underway, which is the most significant capital investment in the company’s history, worth nearly 350 million kunas. The facilities should be completed and ready for use in the first quarter of next year.
This and next year, Čulo expects positive business results and, if everything goes according to plans, the number of employees could increase from the current 9,754 to about 10,000.
Čulo also commented on the pre-Christmas increase in the volume of delivery of packages and other shipments, pointing out that mail carriers were working full-time and as needed. The employees are not allowed to use their annual vacations days during this period and the company, if required, temporarily employs additional staff.
“Although it is not easy to find workers in some parts of Croatia, we manage because people like to work for the postal office, and this year we have increased salaries of postmen and drivers by 18 percent,” Čulo said, adding that the company had signed a collective agreement for the next three years which should keep workers satisfied.
