A great winemaker who stood alongside Plenković, Enjingi, Zdjelarević and Krauthaker

Ivo Skaramuča, legendary Pelješac winemaker, has died on Christmas Eve. He was one of the founders of the new and ambitious wine era in Croatia. Gone too early, aged 64, Index.hr wrote on December 27, 2017.

He was buried on Wednesday in his hometown Pijavičino on the Pelješac peninsula. He was one of only a few great, charismatic pioneers who pushed in the 1990s for a different winemaking in Croatia, turning the philosophy of Croatian wine upside down.

Standing at his side then were the likes of Zlatan Plenković, Vlado Krauthaker, Ivan Enjingi and Davor Zdjelarević. And they succeeded, witnessed by numerous awards on the global level.

Before he went into winemaking, Skaramuča was a ship captain. He was also the largest vineyard land owner at the Dingač appellation, founder of one of the most respected Croatian wine brands, Skaramuča Wines.
