The organisational and creative team of Zagreb Film Festival is also behind the scenes of another film festival, KinoKino, aimed at children. Inspiration for this project came from Cinema Europe as a multi-use space, where all rooms aside from the screening theatre can be used for learning, hangouts, discussions, exchange of experiences and entertainment for the youngest movie-theatre goers.
KinoKino Festival’s third edition will be held from February 14th to 18th 2018 in Zagreb, at Europa Cinema, one of the most important cultural venues in the city of Zagreb and received the Best Programming Award in 2016, given by Europa Cinemas, a network of European cinemas.
The film program will comprise around 30 international mostly fiction films for children up to the age of 14, including recent features and shorts, and several special programs including also film classics for children. A young and professional jury will be deciding on the best entries, while all visitors will decide on Audience award.
Among eight new titles in the main programme are the Norwegian prairie adventure Oskar’s America, the Cyprian drama Boy on the Bridge, the Columbian comedy Bad Lucky Goat and one of the most praised children’s films of the previous year, the award-winning German comedy about life with diversities, At Eye Level. On Wednesday the festival will be opened at 7 pm with a screening of the Swedish box office hit Up in the Sky.
In addition to many films shown, KinoKino Festival will host workshops intended for children, mentored by experts in different cultural, artistic and social fields. The idea is to give children a chance to spend time at the cinema before and after the screenings and to fill this time with learning and fun.
The official section Discovering Every Day includes five short films suitable for 7+ age group, and the screenings will be organised as special interactive events accompanied by a talk about emotions. The chosen shorts are Binary Star, Gemma, Scrap Dolls, Samedi Cinema and the Croatian film Dawn by Krasimir Gančev, about a talented gymnast falling in love with football. For the third year in a row, the Festival features a selection of short animations suitable for preschool children First Time at the Cinema, and for the very first time the programme will take place in both of Europa cinema’s auditoriums: the large hall and the Müller Hall.
