On April 21st, 2018, a festival of activist choirs called “One Voice Festival” will take place at &TD Theater in the Student Center in Zagreb.
Organized by Domino Association and Le Zbor, a feminist activist choir from Zagreb, who have invited 7 other activist choirs from Serbia, Slovenia and Austria to lend their voices to their festival and their causes.
Through this festival, the organizers hope to draw attention to issues each and everyone faces in today’s world rapidly going to hell in a handbasket, both locally and globally. Members of the participating choirs will be women, members of the LGBTQ community, ethnic minorities, atheists, and antifascists. Each of the choirs singing at the festival comes with its own sound, its own history, but they all share one idea and one message – all those who are labeled as different, as “Others”, know how to use their voices and will not be quieted.
And, as we mentioned previously, while the problem is global (can you actually believe that we wrote that antifascists are “Others” and you probably didn’t even notice that to be an odd statement?), the situation in our region regarding women’s rights is getting more and more serious, and it’s important to act now. Women’s rights have been systematically attacked for years now and the legal systems of the countries in our region do not protect women adequately. We are again faced with the unfortunate situation in which women must fight for the rights that had been won decades ago, and the fights of any other group belonging to the category of Others are just as real.
This festival that Domino Association and Le Zbor are creating will inspire change and move towards the common conscience that welcomes equal opportunities, narratives and outcomes, providing artistic and activist support to all those protesting in the streets of our cities for progress. Ginette Sagan said: “Silence in the face of injustice is complicity with the oppressor” and the organizers believe that they don’t have the right to stay silent.
What the organizers need now is a little bit of your help. They have created a crowdfunding campaign, aimed at covering all the travel expenses for 7 regional choirs, and everything donated will directly help the production of our project. They are offering some great perks for their supporters, such as Le Zbor memorabilia and Domino book editions of Susan Sontag and Michel Foucault!
