ZAGREB, May 31, 2018 – The day of Zagreb’s patron saint, Our Lady of the Stone Gate, was marked on Wednesday evening with the celebration of the Eucharist in the Zagreb Cathedral. The ceremony also included a procession with a picture of Our Lady of the Stone Gate from the Cathedral to the nearby Stone Gate (Kamenita vrata) in downtown Zagreb.
Holy Mass was celebrated by the Archbishop of Genoa and president of the Council of Bishops’ Conferences of Europe (CCEE) Angelo Bagnasco.
At the beginning of the Eucharist, the Archbishop of Zagreb, Cardinal Josip Bozanić, said that the Zagreb diocese had been founded in the early 11th century by St Ladislav, the first Croatian-Hungarian king.
The ceremony was attended, among others, by Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandić.
