ZAGREB, June 21, 2018 – The Tourism Ministry has proposed introducing, as of 2019, a higher tourist (sojourn) tax during the peak season, and under the proposal, the tax would be raised from 8 kuna to 10 kuna per person per night.
Under the ministry’s proposal, the tourist tax would go up 25% for all accommodation types except camping sites.
Even with the proposed increase, Croatia would still have the lowest tourist tax of all its peers. Tourist taxes in Spain, for example, range between 0.45 euro and 2.50 euro per day, in Italy between 0.20 euro and 7 euro, in Portugal between 1 euro and 2 euro, in Austria between 0.15 euro and 3 euro, in Greece between 0.50 euro and 4 euro, in Slovenia 2.5 euro, etc.
Tourist tax at campsites would remain at eight kuna per person per night, while in other accommodation types it will go up.
The Croatian National Tourism Board collected 464 million kuna in tourist taxes in 2017.
A lot of other popular European destinations have taken to charging tourists a little bit extra, and Croatia seems eager to follow.
