Smokvun is the magic word to make your life perfectly sweet
Adapted from a story posted on korčula.online
Not too long ago, a group of friends decided to explore the amazing Korčula archipelago. It was pure enjoyment, letting go to something natural and pure. After having caught, cleaned and prepared some fish on the grill, that lunch was awarded with a bottle of premier indigenous wine, Grk, grown in Lumbarda since the Greek times. But, there was something missing to fully complete the magical meal: something sweet. Then someone said just the one word that was needed: Smo-kvun! Somewhere deep in the refridgerator on the boat an amazing surpise waited for us, and we each took one ball. They consisted mostly of one whole dried fig with almond and walnut, covered in chocolate. That was an experience that’s impossible to describe, unless you’ve had it yourself. We were all 100% sure that this product is magical, and that it’s something that’s gonna make an impact.
And that is exactly what happened, as after many years Smokvun has become an exclusive part of the sweet and pleasant ritual with which Korčula Hotels welcome and surprise their most faithfull guests and partners. After having tasted this Korčulan Ferrero Rocher, you are in “danger” of feeling too many blessings, caused by this sweet delicacy. The owner of a family farm, Vedrana Katić, invented this product, and started her business based on this sweet magic. Smokvun became registered as a Croatian Island Product.
There are several versions of smokvun, all based on a dried fig with added nuts. Some are coated in white, some in dark chocolate, some have dried fruit added and are aromatized with a home-made liqueur (top-secret recipe!), and some are seasoned with salt and pepper for added intensity and flavour. Mrs. Katić likes to say that it’s a traditional type of food, and that today, in modern cuisine, it would be categorized as raw food, as there is no baking and no added sugars. You can’t buy this product in many stores, and they’re packed by five, protected by a special seal, where the actual wax in various colours is molten to be sealed. The seal has the contour of one of the Korčula Old Town towers, as well as a fig. Each of the seals is different and unique!
