ZAGREB, October 19, 2018 – Croatian Finance Minister Zdravko Marić and Japanese Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Kenji Yamada signed an agreement in Zagreb on Friday on the avoidance of double taxation between the two countries.
Croatian Foreign Minister Marija Pejčinović Burić was present at the signing, the Finance Ministry said in a press release.
The agreement provides for numerous breaks in the taxation of all kinds of products as well as for improving trade conditions and increasing economic activity between the two countries, the ministry said.
Minister Marić said the agreement was important for boosting economic cooperation. Japan is one of the model economies which can be followed and cooperation possibilities have increased since Croatia joined the European Union, he added. We want to be recognised not just as a tourist country but develop our economy in various directions, and Japan’s experience in that and this agreement can help, Marić said.
Yamada said he hoped the agreement would help to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries. This year is the 25th anniversary of Croatian-Japanese diplomatic relations and I am glad this agreement will set the foundations for new cooperation and stronger economic relations, he added.
Yamada hopes that, aside from its tuna fish, Croatia’s wines will be increasingly recognised in Japan and that the number of Japanese companies doing business in Croatia will also increase.
The agreement now has to be ratified by the Croatian parliament, the ministry said.
