The island of Korcula comes alive with jazz.
For the last few days, attractive sounds of bossa nova, fusion jazz, Latin jazz with a touch of flamenco and gypsy rhythms could be hard on the streets of Korčula, spicing up the already magical summer evenings in that beautiful town, reports Slobodna Dalmacija on August 15, 2015.
The third edition of Korkyra Jazz Festival brought to the people of Korčula and their guests a truly unique musical experience. Organized by Marin Jerkunica and Vanda Ivelja, with the support of the Culture Centre, the City of Korčula, and the Lešić Dimitri Palace, this year’s edition of the festival was moved to a new, more attractive outdoor venue which brought additional attention to the festival.
“For two years, we have had guests from abroad, so we can say that our festival has truly become international. Our wish is for the festival to become a centre of summer musical programme in Korčula, so that we can attract more sponsors and bring more musicians from around the world”, said Vanda Ivelja.
The first evening of the festival featured Andrianao Trinidade, a bossa nova artist from Brazil, and “Gadjo Manouche”, a gypsy jazz band from Zagreb, with a unique rhythm that deeply impressed the audience. During the second night of the festival, Marin Jerkunica, a founder of the festival, was accompanied by three great musicians – trumpeter Ivo Jerkunica, bassist Goran Slaviček and famous Split drummer Jadran Dučić Ćiće. By performing stunts on guitar and hitting the rhythm on its wooden body, he brought to the crowd a magical musical experience.
“This year we have changed the venue, with a great help of the Cultural Centre and mayor Andrija Fabris, who gave us all the necessary permits. We are pleased with the enthusiasm of musicians and audience”, said Marin Jerkunica, adding that next year the festival will be even better.
The mayor of Korčula Andrija Fabris was among the audience. “I support this initiative and I am doing everything in my power to help them. This is the only jazz festival in Korčula and we should promote it whenever we can”, said the mayor.
