One of the special cases they offer is the Indigenous Croatian red varieties package, featuring 6 wines made from indigenous Croatian red varieties, from various Croatian regions. Those six wines are: Jerković Mračaj 2012, Bibich R6 Riserva 2014, Duboković Laganini 2012, Vuina Crljenak 2013, Rossi Refošk Istarski 2011 and Miloš Plavac 2012.
Jerković Mračaj is a very rare wine, made using an extremely rare variety called rudežuša, indigenous variety for the Imotski region – and you probably won’t be able to buy another varietal wine of pure rudežuša in Croatia. Low on alcohol, high on the mineral, herbal and fruity aromas, it’s quite different than most Dalmatian reds.
Bibich R6 Riserva is a blend, a dry red from the Šibenik region, containing babić, lasina and plavina. It is light and smooth, smells like sweet berries and has a pronounced and intentional rustic charm.
Duboković laganini is in fact drnekuša, another indigenous favourite of the Dalmatian island of Hvar, named after the fact that it’s light on the alcohol (below 12%), however it’s full of wonderful aromas of strawberries and cherries and Mediterranean herbs.
Vuina Crljenak is a wine that comes from the ancient homeland of Crljenak Kaštelanski – Kaštela. A variety quite similar to plavac, this crljenak proves that they are not the same variety, as it is without the tartness found in many plavac wines, and with low tannins, this wine needs to breathe a lot before showing all its qualities: great acids, deep fruits and a hint of saltiness.
Rossi Refošk Istarski is, as you probably guessed yourself, quite similar to teran, a highly debated wine variety these days. It is ruby red, and you can taste the aromas of berries (cherries, blackcurrants), some black pepper and vanilla from the wooden barrels and a touch of cinnamon.
Miloš Plavac is a representative of the best-known red wine indigenous Croatian variety, plavac mali, and it is a classical representative of the variety. It comes from Pelješac, and you can taste all of the sun the grapes have received in the glass. It’s strong, complex, has high tannins but remains authentically earthy.
All of the wines in the package are at their prime now, having aged just enough to offer you the best possible experience of different Croatian indigenous reds, and the price of 90€ is extremely fair for 6 so carefully selected bottles, some of which are not easily found. Give them a taste!
