Mljet island

Total Croatia News

Croatia’s greenest island is considered to be one of the most beautiful islands in Croatia. Wonder why?

The famous turquoise color of two saltwater lakes Veliko (Big) and Malo jezero (Small lake) will make you stay at the island longer than previously planned. In the middle of the Big lake there is an old Benedictine monastery. If you would like to go there, you have to take the red flag and wave from the mainland to draw the attention of the boatman who will transfer you to the island within 5 minutes. Surrounded by the Mediterrranean vegetation and a scent of forest pine, visitors can enjoy swimming in the lakes in the northern part of Mljet which is a protected Croatian National Park or at the Saplunara beach in the south of the island.

Legend has it that a legendary Greek king of Ithaca and the hero of Homer’s epic poem, Odysseus, was captivated on island of Mljet because the nymph Calypso who ruled the island “trapped” him for seven years. Famous Odysseus cave, near the village of Babino polje, provides a mesmerizing effect of colors in the sea and it is not to be missed.

The island has a regular ferry connections with Dubrovnik as well as with Peljesac Peninsula at the Croatian mainland.
