Some visitors to Dubrovnik may have heard that it’s very expensive here. If you choose to stay in one of the 5-Star hotels and eat at the most expensive restaurants, it will be. But it doesn’t have to be. One way to reduce the cost of your holiday is to buy a tourist discount card called the Dubrovnik Card.
Depending on which type of card you buy (1-day, 3-day or 7-day), a Dubrovnik Card gives you free entry to up to 8 cultural-historical monuments (9 from 1st June as The Rector’s Palace in Dubrovnik, which houses The Cultural Historical Museum, is currently closed for renovation until 31st May) in Dubrovnik and 3 in Cavtat (a beautiful coastal town approximately 12 miles south of Dubrovnik). You also get free public transport, as well as discount at certain restaurants, bars, shops, wellness & spa centres, and on excursions with various tourist agencies.
You can buy the Dubrovnik Card from tourist board offices as well as some hotels and travel agencies. You can also buy a card on-line, where you will receive a 10% discount. If buying on-line you can collect your Dubrovnik Card from one of four tourist board offices, Pile (Brsalje 5), Gruž (Obala Ivana Pavla II 1), Lapad (Kralja Tomislava 7) or Cavtat (Zidine 6).
There are three types of card available, 1-day, 3-day and 7-day. Each type of card comes with a very useful 160 page guide which gives details of the card purchased, a brief history of the area, information about the various attractions and museums covered by the card, a map of the local bus routes, a map of the area showing the locations of the attractions, restaurants, shops etc which accept discount on production of the Dubrovnik Card, and adverts for the various Dubrovnik Card Partners giving details of their location and the offers available. The 1-day card costs 170 HRK (153 HRK if ordered on-line) and entitles you to free entry to 6 museums, 2 galleries and the city walls (currently the usual price for entry to the city walls is 120 HRK), free bus rides on public transport for 24 hours, and discount at restaurants, shops etc. The 3-day card costs 250 HRK (225 HRK if ordered on-line) and gives you free entry to 6 museums, 2 galleries and the city walls plus 1 museum in Cavtat. You will also get 6 free rides on public transport throughout the city of Dubrovnik and 2 rides on suburban buses taking you to Cavtat, as well as 30% discount for 4 other (named) attractions (including the beautiful island of Lokrum). The 7-day card costs 350 HRK (315 HRK if ordered on-line). Again, you get free entry to 6 museums 2 galleries and the city walls plus 1 museum in Cavtat. You will also get 10 free rides on public transport throughout the city and 4 rides on suburban buses taking you to Cavtat. You will also receive 30% or 50% discount for 5 (named) attractions.
Having bought the Dubrovnik Card on previous visits to this beautiful city I would definitely recommend buying one. The local bus tickets are very helpful, especially if you are staying at one of hotels in Lapad, Babin Kuk or Gruž. When I first started visiting Dubrovnik some years ago, like a lot of tourists, I thought the Old Town was THE place to go for a good meal. This is NOT true. There are many places outside of the Old Town that serve excellent meals, some of which give discount on production of the Dubrovnik Card.
