Korčula is known as a very green island, in fact the name given to it by the Greeks was Korkyra Melaina, meaning black Korčula, as from a distance the dense pine forests made it appear almost black. But to keep it so densely forested, residents need to keep a sharp eye out for the first signs of fire. Professional firefighters take turns watching over the island from some of the highest vantage points. Lonely work sometimes, but rewarded with the best panoramic sights of the island and beyond. On a clear day, it is no surprise to see the Italian coastline, some 135 kilometers away.
