St. Theodore’s Day Celebrations in Korčula in 2018

Total Croatia News

One of the most festive days for the inhabitants of Korčula.

St. Theodore is the co-parton saint of the Korčula town, along with St. Mark (the Cathedral is dedicated to him), but the people of Korčula revere St. Theodore and celebrate his day as the biggest celebration of the town of Korčula.

Every year, St. Theodore’s is celebrated on July 29th (although the date is right in the middle of the tourist season, we assure you that it’s a coincidence: St. Theodore has been celebrated on that date for much longer than there has been tourism on Korčula), with a set of events marking it.

This year first event dedicated to the celebration of St. Theodore’s will be the concert by a very famous Croatian “klapa” Intrade and their lead singer Tomislav Bralić, which will take place on Thursday night, on the 26th of July, on the Korčula main square, so-called Plokata. The entrance is free, of course, because – well, let’s just say we’d love to see someone trying to charge an admission fee for an event taking place on that specific location – a square in the town centre, with at least 10 possible ways to get into.

Then, on the 28th of July, a session of the Town Council will be held, which will aim at celebrating the best and the most remarkable people and institutions in Korčula, as well as giving the award to the best sportsperson on Korčula in 2017. Later that evening there will be the procession.

Korčula has three brotherhoods, or religious fraternities, founded and maintained by laymen but closely related to the church. All Saints brotherhood was founded in 1301, St Rocco’s in 1575 and the youngest brotherhood, St Virgin Mary of Consolation (St. Michaels) was founded in 1603. Each of the brotherhoods has their own church, rules, goals and projects in the community they support, but the processions through the town are one thing that brings them together each year. There is one big procession in the spring, for the Easter celebrations, and another major one is the procession through the town as a part of the celebration of St. Theodore’s day. The procession down the main street of the town, from the Cathedral to the Town gate is an event not to be missed if you’re near Korčula, and it will start after the celebratory mass at the cathedral, which is to be held at 7:30 pm.

After that a very festive performance of Moreška will be held, free for all visitors.
