There are some rather unusual world championships around the globe, but when I heard about the World Cigar Smoking Championships in Split, I was more than a little intrigued.

Not for the actual smoking, I who have only smoked two cigarettes in my life, but quite how such an event would look, and how one would determine the winner.

As we reported earlier this year, it was a few days of planned hedonism, and so it proved – quite an itinerary.

A few days of hedonism, that is for sure, parts of which were captured by the keen eye of Ivan Ivanisevic from Virtual Tour.

Some 48 men and women from 19 countries took part in this, the fourth world championship, which was once again organised by international cigar club Mareva, which is based in Split.

But what do you have to do to become a cigar-smoking world champion?

It takes skill, patience and time. And a lot of smoking.

The goal of the competition is to smoke a Montecristo No. 4 cigar in the longest possible time using only 2 matches.

And do congratulations to Russian banker Alexander Shagay from St Petersburg, for his quite astonishing of accomplishment of stretching out the one cigar to an impressive 1 hour 45 minutes. A worthy world champion.

If you would like to get in training for next year’s event, start smoking now, and check out the Club Mareva website for the very latest.

Photographer Ivan Ivanisevic was on board a hedonistic boat to Solta as part of the festivities, organised by leading yacht charter company Cro Yachting, with owner Martin below.
