Famous Croatian Artist in the Heart of Split: Ivan Kožarić in the Old City Hall

Total Croatia News

This summer, Split has the privilege to enjoy an exceptional visual treat from the great Croatian sculptor Ivan Kožarić, according to a report in Slobodna Dalmacija on July 31, 2015. His works will come to Split thanks to Miloš Glavurtić and the city department of culture. Even though there will not be a grand opening, and the 94-year-old artist will not come to the city, the displayed works will be enough to create a real cultural spectacle.

“Kožarić was my big motive, a reason to honor my city with such a great master. It took just sixty days to turn an almost impossible mission into a reality. My obsession is motivated by an eternal question – Why do some things do not happen? For this reason, in 2008 I initiated the Picasso exhibition at the Art Gallery in Dubrovnik, and I realized that the local community feels the need for truly global cultural experiences. Warhol and Giacometti then followed…”, said Glavurtić.

“In Split, in just forty days a Chagall exhibition was organized, and it became the most visited exhibition in the history of the city. Kožarić is without a doubt our greatest living artist for the outside world, but Split has never had a significant exhibition by him. Now, we shall see his sculptures, drawings, oils, as well as documents, photographs… The second floor is lighter, dedicated to drawings and canvases, the first is occupied by sculptures, while the ground floor is reserved for ‘monuments'”, added Glavurtić.

One of the interesting exhibits on the ground floor is a small Grounded Sun, only half a meter in diameter, since the real one from Bogovićeva Street in Zagreb could not be brought to Split.

The exhibition will enable visitors to gain insight into the meaning of Kožarić’s oeuvre and to get acquainted with the his works from the 1950s to today.
