HDLU (Meštrović Pavilion)

Total Croatia News

One of the most unique cultural venues and the official seat of the Croatian Association of Artists (HDLU) can be found on Trg žrtava fašizma (the Square of the Victims of Fascism). It was designed by Ivan Meštrović, famous Croatian sculptor and architect, in 1930, to serve as an exhibition pavilion. However, during World War II, minarets were added and the building was turned into a mosque, which is why people still call it džamija (Croatian for mosque).

In 1949 the minarets were demolished, an additional floor and staircases were added, and in 1955 the building became the Museum of Revolution.

The Croatian Association of Artists moved their seat back to the pavilion in 1993, and the building was restored to its original form by removing all subsequently added layers in 2003 and 2006.

The Pavilion is an important exhibition space nowadays, housing more than 40 events annually.
