We’re used to seeing the cathedral in Zagreb wrapped in scaffolding. The same applies to various buildings adjacent to the Jelačić square, covered with annoying billboards while their facades are being renovated. However, did you ever see the entire square look like a building site?

The Summer Universiade, a well-known multi-sport event that took place in Zagreb in July 1987, served as an initiative for building multiple sports venues, but also presented an opportunity to renovate parts of the Lower Town. The main square, called Republic Square at the time, was repaved and made part of the pedestrian zone.
