Croatian Centre of UNIMA and ASSITEJ Croatia are organizing a joint celebration of World Puppetry Day (March 21) and World Day of Theatre for Children and Young People (March 20) which will be held at Zagreb Puppet Theatre on March 21, Moj Zagreb.info reported earlier today.
The program is co-financed by the City of Zagreb and Zagreb Mayor, Mr. Milan Bandić.
The event starts at 11 a.m., when ASSITEJ Croatia will present their program for Assitej Artistic Gathering 2019, followed by Little Red Riding Hood, a free puppet play by Zagreb Puppet Theatre at 6 p.m., and ending with a formal session of Croatian Centre of UNIMA and a banquet, at 7:30 p.m.
Free tickets for the play can be obtained at the Theatre’s ticket office.
UNIMA (Union Internationale de la Marionnette) is an International Puppetry Association, founded in Prague in 1929 by puppetry enthusiasts from seven different countries with the aim of promoting the development of puppetry as an art form. The Croatian Centre of UNIMA was founded in 1992 and World Puppetry Day has been celebrated in different Croatian cities since 2004.
Nancy Lohman Stub, vice-president of UNIMA and one of the authors of the Worldwide Encyclopaedia of Puppetry Arts, invited everyone to join the global celebration, stating that traditional puppetry can be used to discover the common humanity that lies beneath our cultural differences and Himzo Nuhanović, winner of series of Croatian performance arts awards, stated that it’s not a coincidence that World Puppetry Day is celebrated on the first day of spring and added that he felt honoured to present his opinion on this art form which, even though it is commonly reserved for children, is a praiseworthy art form that more adults should enjoy.
