International competition takes place from May 1st to May 31st
The ECC is a cycling contest comprised of city teams with an unlimited number of team members – anyone can register online and start tracking their bike rides around town to contribute to the team score. At the end of the month, all individual trips will be added up and the largest sum of kilometres will decide the winning city.
Apart from providing obvious physical benefits and inticing a healthy dose of competitiveness based on local pride, the ECC helps in reducing the CO2 emission. Previous editions have also contributed to urban planning – the analysis of all GPS data collected during the challenge helped to ascertain cyclists’ needs and resulted in multiple cities installing new bicycle racks and bike lanes.
Last year, the ECC total reached a staggering sum of 4 million kilometres cycled, and the contest was won by the city of Gdansk whose resident cyclists tracked 828000 km. Zagreb ranked 24th with a measly sum of 42000km, so it might be the time to raise that score. To participate, you need to download the free Naviki app on your smartphone and track your rides around Zagreb. You can enter up to six trips a day, as long as you remain within city limits and don’t exceed the average speed of 30 km/h. A regularly updated leaderboard will be available at the ECC website at all times. Happy tracking!
