New Recreational Park to Be Built East of Bundek

A new recreational park might soon be built on the large green area east of Lake Bundek (Racinjak Park).

Skatepark, adrenaline playground, roller skating paths, baseball court, model car racing centre, numerous children’s playground areas, promenades and open-air seating areas are just some of the novelties that should soon be built on the large green area east of Lake Bundek (Racinjak Park).

The City of Zagreb has announced an architecture competition for the (preliminary) design of this area covering 29 hectares, reports Jutarnji.hr on September 30, 2017.

The total cost of the investment is around 18 million kunas. However, it might increase by at least 20 percent because the space in question is not fully owned by the city. Namely, part of the parcel where a baseball court plans to be built is owned by Zona Četiri, whose director is a distinguished Zagreb architect Jadranka Kruljac Polak, who is Marina Mamić’s sister (Zdravko Mamić’s wife). According to land-registry, Zona Četiri owns two parcels totalling 7261 m² on this area.

These parcels attracted public attention four years ago when Mayor Milan Bandić announced the construction of Aquapark in this area, adding that this project would be declared to be of particular public interest and thus would attract all private owners. In the meantime, the Aquapark project has been abandoned.

The idea of a recreational park east of Bundek was pushed forward in 2007 when the preliminary design plan was made, which was changed two years later. Meanwhile, in 2008, the company Zona Četiri was founded. Already at the beginning of 2009, according to the documentation from the archive session of the City Assembly, the company bought these two parcels from private owners for about 200 thousand euros, which is about 1.5 million kunas.

At the end of September 2012, the City wanted to buy this land from Mamić’s sister-in-law, so that it could start with the project for three million kunas, according to a court expert’s estimate. But this job did not come to fruition because the then convocation of the Assembly, in which Bandic had no majority, rejected this proposal.

Jadranka Kruljac Polak said she didn’t know anything about the recent announcement of the architecture competition for the design and concept of the park, organized by the Zagreb Architects Society (DAZ). “This is the first time I’m hearing about this. No one from the City has contacted us. The land is still in our possession. But apart from ours, there are other smaller private plots. We’ll see how this will be realized,” said Polak.

The new baseball ground to be built on these two private parcels will be expanded to a total of 14,000 m², and will also have a prefabricated auditorium with 1000 seats. The future Racinjak park would also feature skate park of about 3000 m², adrenaline park on 1000 m², rolling skating paths, and on the area behind the Freedom Bridge there will be a zone for model car racing centre. The children’s play area would have equipment for kids of all ages, a playground for children with special needs, booths for children’s playrooms, a children’s cycling area, a mini skate park for children and other facilities.

The deadline for delivering design and architectural solutions is November 28, 2017.
