Before finishing their secondary education, 10,000 Zagreb secondary school graduates take part in a huge graduation parade and party, the popular norijada. The parade has caused controversies over the past few years because incidents such as causing fires, getting arrested (or this year’s incident when the students painted a dog over with swastikas) have become a common occurrence.
There are, of course, positive examples as well – social store in Zagreb invited students to leave the flour that is traditionally thrown around in their schools so it could be donated to families in need, and Zagreb’s Fifteenth Gymnasiums did just that.
As with all things in life, some people are in favour of the parade, saying that the students deserve to have some fun and that it’s always been like this, while others claim that the parade has become too wild and that it’s just an excuse to demolish the city.
We found some examples of what graduates and the parade looked like in the 20th century, courtesy of Zagreb – kakav je bio nekada Facebook group.
