“Parked carts and unsupervised cows munching the weeds that grow amid the cobblestones are a familiar sight in the old sector of Zagreb.”
Zagreb streets and façades in the centre haven’t always been in great shape in the past – in fact, they were pretty derelict until they underwent a thorough renovation process before the Summer Universiade in 1987.
However, many members of Zagreb – kakav je bio nekada Facebook group were pretty suspicious about the date of this photo because they thought that the central part of the city must have looked more city-like in the ‘50s.
The backside of the photo says:
“Parked carts and unsupervised cows munching the weeds that grow amid the cobblestones are a familiar sight in the old sector of Zagreb. Cow and cart were left in the middle of the narrow street by a peasant who stopped for a bit of refreshment in the restaurant across the way.

Kaptolskoj kleti is no longer there, Konoba Bracera took its place shortly after this photo was taken.
You can see that Tkalčićeva had a similar cobblestone ground as Kaptol did but it was in a slightly better condition.
It was allowed for sellers to bring their groceries to be sold at Dolac using carts pulled by cows and horses until 1955-1956, and the same goes for freshly washed laundry from Šestine. Below you can see a young little laundress learning the trade, also in the ’50s.
