We’ve decided to introduce you to some of the myths and legends related to our beautiful city and county – first up is the legend of the Hajdi.
Samobor is famous for its Baroque architecture, Carnival and delicious kremšnite, but did you know that, a long time ago, a tribe of giants used to live here?
A long, long time ago, giants used to live on the slopes of Samobor Hills. They were so tall that their shin bone alone was the size of an average human, and so strong that they could pull out an entire oak tree with its roots, to use it as a bludgeon. They lived in caves and forests, and they built the Sv. Križ chapel in Otruševec.
Eventually, average-sized people started moving to Samobor in such great numbers that the Hajdi had to protect themselves by building tall fences lined with huge trees and rocks. This is how the tradition of building wooden fences around your property started in Samobor.
As the number of people started growing, the Hajdi kept moving from one hill to another. The last surviving members of the tribe lived on a hill which was named Hajdovčak after them, and where you can still find their large bones at the old cemetery.
