After the celebrations of 400 years of the oldest public theatre in Europe, an even older date to celebrate – 500 years of the Hvar Rebellion.
Several years ago, when I had a real estate business on Hvar, one of the properties on my books was a ruin in Vrbanj for 35,000 euro. It needed total reconstruction, had no view or great selling points apart from one curious thing – a plaque of someone famous on the wall.
I paid little attention to it and do not recall a single viewing, but years later I realised it was the birthplace of Matija Ivanic, who – as I learned when I wrote the first edition of the guidebook – was the leader of the infamous Hvar Rebellion of 1510-14.
The picture above, taken from the house in Vrboska where he moved to, also commemorates the rebellion, and it strikes me that there is a great opportunity to turn the 500 year anniversary into a tourism celebration of some kind (actually the idea is from Ivana Krstulovic Caric over coffee this morning).
We are more than happy to work with or promote any initiatives, and hope something comes of it. 2013 is 100 years of football on Hvar, and a great opportunity to do something, but nothing concrete so far. To learn more about the Hvar Rebellion, here is the Wikipedia account to get you started.
