American Ambassador in Jelsa, and Whose Wines Do They Serve at the Embassy?

Total Croatia News

The American ambassador is in Jelsa with his wife, as it emerges that Hvar wines are served at official American Embassy functions.

Someone complained to me recently that I write too much about Andro Tomic. Apart from the fact that I write for Andro on his own blog, the fact is that it is impossible to write less about him, as he is always up to something interesting.

Take the recent piece of history created in Jelsa last week with the arrival of the first scheduled hydroplane in modern European aviation history. I could not make the event as I had meetings with two ministries in Zagreb, but as far as I could see, the only person to mark the event was Andro, gifting the first passengers with a boxed magnum of his excellent Veliki Plavac Mali.

And even on a supposedly slow news day on Sunday, there is plenty of action at the Bastijana winery, as Andro hosted American Ambassador Ken Merton and his wife Susan for a chat and wine tasting.

A lovely couple by all accounts, and it was nice to learn that Tomic wines are served at official functions at the American Embassy, just one more promotion of Hvar wines on the international stage.

A nice relationship between the American Ambassador and perhaps Jelsa’s finest ambassador.

No time for Andro to rest, however, as Jelsa and Bastijana welcome the town’s newest temporary resident Jo Ahearne this week, one of only 314 Masters of Wine in the world. Jo has decided to move to Jelsa to make her own wine, with a little initial help from Andro’s facilities. A great story for Hvar wine, and one which started over a complaint to Total Hvar about a lack of vowels in some wine labels… Welcome Jo!
